Building a Safer, Stronger London: Chief Thai Truong Discusses Community Safety and Business Confidence at Chamber Power Hour
Public safety, community trust, and economic vitality took centre stage as the London Chamber of Commerce welcomed London Police Chief Thai Truong for the inaugural edition of the Power Hour series on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.

Bringing together members of London’s business community, the discussion offered an opportunity to hear directly from Chief Truong about the evolving public safety landscape, the priorities guiding the London Police Service, and the importance of collaboration in building a safer, more vibrant city.
Throughout his remarks, Chief Truong emphasized three priorities shaping his leadership: community trust, community safety, and organizational wellness.
Building Trust Through Visibility and Accountability
A central theme of the discussion was the importance of strengthening relationships between police and the communities they serve.
Chief Truong highlighted the need for greater police visibility, meaningful community engagement, and positive interactions that build confidence and encourage residents to report crime and seek assistance when needed.
He also discussed efforts to modernize the London Police Service, including investments in technology, internal systems, and body-worn cameras to support transparency, accountability, and operational effectiveness.
Recognizing the financial considerations associated with these improvements, Chief Truong described modernization as a long-term process requiring sustained planning, investment, and organizational commitment.
Public Safety and Economic Vitality Go Hand in Hand
For London’s business community, the relationship between public safety and economic confidence was a particularly relevant aspect of the conversation.
Chief Truong acknowledged the challenges facing businesses, especially in the downtown core, including property damage, repeated trespassing, and concerns about safety in public spaces.
He stressed that beyond enforcement statistics, residents and business owners want to see tangible improvements in their everyday experiences, including feeling safe when visiting, working, shopping, and operating businesses throughout the city.
A welcoming and secure environment is essential to supporting local commerce, attracting investment, encouraging visitors, and maintaining confidence in London’s downtown and surrounding business districts.
Addressing Complex Challenges Through Collaboration
The discussion also explored the interconnected challenges of homelessness, mental health, substance use, and community safety.
Chief Truong spoke about the London Police Service’s Open Air Substance Use Strategy, outlining how the initiative has provided opportunities to gather information, assess community concerns, and evaluate responses to issues affecting public spaces and businesses.
He acknowledged that these challenges cannot be addressed through enforcement alone and require coordinated efforts involving police, community organizations, service providers, businesses, and all levels of government.
The conversation reinforced the need to move beyond identifying challenges toward developing practical, collaborative, and sustainable solutions that consider both public safety and the needs of vulnerable community members.
Investing in Young People and Planning for the Future
Looking beyond immediate public safety concerns, Chief Truong emphasized the importance of investing in young people as part of a long-term approach to crime prevention and community well-being.
He spoke about the need to build positive relationships with youth, create opportunities for engagement, and establish trust that can strengthen community-police relationships over time.
Chief Truong also addressed the importance of preparing the London Police Service for emerging challenges, including regional and national security considerations, evolving crime trends, and the changing needs of a growing city.
His message underscored the value of proactive planning rather than relying solely on reactive responses.
